What is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

There are many occasions that a Medicare supplemental insurance just makes sense. If a person has had many health issues and knows that that the possibility exists for numerous doctor trips, that is a perfect reason to have a medicare supplement. Supplements allow a person to average their medical bills over the course of a year. Your premiums are set to a monthly amount. When you go to the doctor there is no co-pay like you have with a traditional health insurance policy. Another excellent benefit of having a supplement is that you will know your exact medical cost each year. Whatever your monthly premium costs are for the year is your yearly medical cost.

I have found that supplements are easy to shop for. It was easy to pick the right kind of plan once I knew exactly what kind of medical care that I needed. Supplement plans are standard. This means that all of the insurance companies have to offer the exact coverage in each plan. They are not allowed to cherry pick the coverage that they want to offer potential clients.

Supplements are sold by what looks like an alphabet soup. They are listed A, B, C, etc. Each letter supplement offers different medical services. The hardest part about picking a supplement plan is doing research on the different insurance companies. Every insurance company that sells medicare supplements has to sell what is known as a plan A supplement. If they sell other supplement plans they also have to sell plans C and F.

An interesting note about supplements is who is eligible for them. Of course, the first requirement is that you have to be eligible to receive medicare, but you also have to qualify medically for a supplement. The only time that an insurance company cannot turn down a request for a supplement is if the recipient is newly eligible. After that time the company can disqualify on pre-existing grounds.
